There are several pubs for meals, as well as a cafe at the end of the long jetty over the mud flats, like an oasis in a desert. It has mixed reviews but the muffins were fresh and delicious. I also checked the old gaol, merely steel bars on three sides. Placards describe the sad plight of the Aboriginals in the 1880’s, the attempted insurrection by Jandamurra, an d his death at Tunnel Creek. Their reason was mere survival; sheep were fouling the waterholes and eating the bush foods. A sad tale.
Also checked the bird sanctuary at the waste water environmental facility, but it’s not great for viewing. Dinner at the Wharf at sunset is a popular spot, and what a sunset today due to the contrasting strongly saturated red and blue colours – I kept shooting till complete darkness. The Cafe serves a good meal from a wide menu, and having booked this morning we had the corner table with the best view.
