Day 2: Yallingup to Moses Rock 16.75km

Though the track is mid-range in distance, the elevation diagram shows this part involves a lot of uphill, 348m up and 310m down. From Yallingup, we passed over the very scenic granite headland at Torpedo Rock and walked on to the fabled Smith’s Beach where we stopped for a coffee and cake at the resort (which was very busy). It’s amazing to see several people out in the water in this cold wind, some without wet suits.

After Smith’s Beach the topography changed to giant, pink granite boulders and cliffs, standing in contrast to the low vegetation and blue crashing sea near Canal Rocks. We climbed high over the ridge to view Canal Rocks from Rotary Lookout, before dropping back down on to the beach at Injidup. The carpark was pretty busy as this is a popular scenic spot. The rocks form a barrier against the crashing waves, some of the water then pours in a brief waterfall through gaps in the rock, forming the Injidup natural spa.

Peigi is having problems with a knee, and I’m finding the uphill very tiring. And it’s not so much the weight as I only have 5kg. So we opted to leave after a lunch under the tee trees, giving us time to shower and rest. (Tomorrow we have to do the entire day, but we will cut all other days shorter too.) From there, the track weaves through areas of limestone cliff and granite before entering through the stunted vegetation and granite fields of Moses Rock where the group had a wine tasting and nibbles overlooking the dramatic scenery, before returning to accommodation for an ‘eat-in’ meal by Cape to Cape Moveable Feast. The 22 hikers are mostly women 50 to 65 – only 4 men! We walk in two groups about 15 minutes apart; ours is only 8 (we think because of the bus sizes and the other larger group are in tents at the same place).
