Another long trek, but mostly downhill. We started amongst the tall karris of Boranup Forest where we stopped yesterday, then headed south, through the coastal heath, and down onto the beautiful Boranup Beach. This section was up and down along solid track.
Then we faced over 7kms of sand walking to protected Hamelin Bay, home to some of the Cape’s friendliest stingrays, not that we saw them. The lovely well shaded camp and cabins of Hamelin are at the end of the headland (not the island further right) shown on the 3rd image – a long way! Most of the sand was firm and flat but the last 1-2km was very tiring, soft and steep sloped. It would be an ordeal in summer, but a cool breeze was welcomed. Peigi is still having knee issues, so we had already requested a pick-up here. Lunch in the shade, and an icecream energised us enough to ‘go out in the mid-day sun’ to the bare glaring limestone head overlooking the bay before the bus arrived. About 14 km covered today, but very hard going. At the bay we met the girl we saw the first day; she had today off, and not surprising, carrying all her camp stuff on that sand! She said she cried twice and no wonder.
The others continued on past the many islands and headlands through the coastal heath and past small Foul Bay Lighthouse on the ridge, ending at Cosy Corner, where we met them in the bus later.
Another large dinner at The Brewhouse in Margaret River.
